Iola High’s softball junior varsity Fillies didn’t fare well at home Thursday against Independence High’s Bulldogs.
Independence defeated Iola 9-3 in the opener. Mackenzie Weseloh pitched a complete game for Iola, allowing 11 hits, walking four and striking out six.
With two outs in the first inning, Tessa Rowe doubled and scored on a triple by Shelby Reno for Iola’s first run.
Abbey St. Clair singled to start the second inning followed by a walk to Channel Coyne. Bayleigh Seeber hit into a fielder’s choice then Weseloh singled in the run with two outs.
It was 7-2 when Iola scored in the third. Rowe was hit by a pitch and Reno drew a walk. Baylea Thompson singled then St. Clair reached on an error and a run was scored.
The other hit of the game was a single by Coyne.
Independence kept the Fillies hitless in the second game, winning 14-0 in four innings. Thompson pitched for Iola, allowing 13 hits, walking three and striking out one. Iola’s defense made six errors.
